Procedural Volcano – Houdini Personal Exploration

This personal project started as a technical test, aimed at exploring Houdini’s terrain generation (Heightfields) and texturing capabilities using the COPs (Copernicus) system.

What began as a simple scene quickly evolved into a cinematic volcanic landscape — combining procedural terrain, volumetrics, and instanced vegetation into one cohesive composition.

Key features include:

  • Procedural terrain built with Heightfields

  • Texturing and color control via COPs

  • Volumetric smoke and fog simulation

  • Instanced tree scattering with custom masks

  • Rendered with Redshift

The volcano theme was unplanned — but turned out to be the perfect playground to test multiple systems at once.

A personal project that originated from commercial work, I decided to take it further and make some video showcasing gravitational lensing inspired by Interstellar movie.
